Belagavi: Olympic games participant Sahana Kumari and her husband international sports personality Nagaraj BG inaugurated the 24th Inter-Collegiate Athletic Sports Meet organized by Visvesvaraya Technological University (
VTU), at its Jnanasangama campus, Belagavi on Sunday. Vice-chancellor Vidyashankar S presided over.
Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Sahana Kumari said, “It is a matter of pride that despite being engineering students, you are taking part in this sports meet with so much enthusiasm.
This would help to make sports more popular and encourage sportsmen to work hard and make achievements at nationals and Olympics,” she said.
Another guest Nagaraj BG said sports can have a major impact on anyone's health in a positive way. Sports and exercise should be incorporated into people's routines, leading to a healthy life, he said.
Vice-chancellor Prof Vidyashankar S in his presidential speech advised students to engage in sports activities along with academic activities, which can help them to improve their physical and mental health. “That is why sports, yoga and NSS activities are included in the engineering curriculum,” he stated.
“VTU has instructed all its affiliated colleges to make sports events mandatory,” he added
Registrar Prof B E Rangaswamy, registrar (evaluation) Prof TN Shrinivas, finance officer MA Sapna, and VTU physical education department director Puttaswamy were present. More than 1,500 students will participate in the five-day sports event.
