Charaideo District Enhances Juvenile Justice System: Stakeholders Meet to Improve Child Protection and Rehabilitation

Dibrugarh: Quarterly review and stakeholders’ meeting of the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in Charaideo district was held at the DC office conference hall on Wednesday. The session was chaired by district & sessions judge Abubakkar Siddique and focused on strengthening child protection mechanisms and improving justice delivery systems.The meeting addressed critical issues related to the implementation of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, with particular emphasis on enhancing coordination among various agencies involved in child welfare and protection.Key agenda items included the rehabilitation of children in conflict with the law and improving the operational efficiency of child welfare committees (CWCs). Participants extensively discussed measures to expedite pending cases involving minors, acknowledging the time-sensitive nature of juvenile justice proceedings.The review covered various aspects under the JJB’s jurisdiction, with officials analysing case disposal rates and the effectiveness of existing rehabilitation programs. Current procedures were scrutinised, and stakeholders identified areas requiring immediate improvement to ensure more effective justice delivery for juvenile cases.
Emphasising the need for a child-friendly justice system, judge Siddique said rehabilitation must remain the primary focus.“Every stakeholder has a role to play in ensuring children in conflict with the law receive the necessary guidance for successful reintegration into society. It is our collective duty to guide these children and ensure they are fully equipped to rejoin society,” he said.Sub-divisional district magistrate and principal magistrate of the JJB, Tanwir Ikram Hazarika, also stressed the importance of inter-agency cooperation.The session saw active participation from key stakeholders across the juvenile justice ecosystem. Secretary of the district legal services authority (DLSA), Niva Rani Doloi, shared insights on legal aid provisions for minors. Additional Superintendent of Police, Jyoti Prasad Pegu, addressed law enforcement perspectives on juvenile cases. Assistant commissioner and acting district child protection officer, Rini Hazarika, highlighted ongoing challenges in child protection services and proposed solutions for improved service delivery.Stakeholders agreed to implement the recommended improvements to enhance the overall effectiveness of juvenile justice delivery in Charaideo district, aiming for better protection and rehabilitation outcomes for children within the justice system.
