DIBRUGARH: Six persons, including five Railway employees, have died and two have been critically injured when the jeep they were travelling in skidded off the road and rolled down 25 feet into a water-filled ditch near the Bogibeel Bridge construction site, about 20 km from the town.
The accident occurred when the eight persons were returning from the railway site office at Bogibeel to Dibrugarh around 6.35 pm on Saturday.
Locals helped police to fish out the victims' bodies and rescue the injured passengers trapped inside the vehicle. Among the eight, seven were working with the Railway's accounts department.
A senior railway official said Prema Kanta Sonowal, Hemanta Kumar Hazarika, Sujit Sarkar, Manoranjan Saikia and Ramen Das (driver) died on the spot, while Ratneswar Das succumbed to his injuries at a local nursing a few hours after the accident.
Ratan Das and Debojit Saikia are recovering at the Railway hospital in Dibrugarh. Ratneswar and Ratan were employees of the Lumding railway division and had come to the town for a departmental inspection. The rest were from Dibrugarh.
