GUWAHATI: National Register of Citizens (NRC) updating authority in
Assam has lodged an FIR with Assam Police CID charging former state coordinator of
NRC and IAS officer Prateek Hajela, who had led the updating and publication of the controversial document under supervision of the Supreme Court, with anti-national act for allegedly facilitating entry of names of ineligible persons as Indian nationals in the document.
In the FIR present state coordinator of NRC Hitesh Dev Sarma has stated, “it is suspected that despite the mandate of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India for an error free NRC, the then State Coordinator, NRC Sri Prateek Hajela may have intentionally avoided the mandatory quality check by ordering use of a software which prevented quality check and facilitated entry of names of ineligible person into the NRC which can be seen as an anti national act affecting the national security.”
Hajela with the help of a Supreme Court order in 2019 got himself transferred to Madhya Pradesh on deputation for three years.
The FIR has also named a few other officers and data entry operators who are alleged to have “conspired” along with Hajela.
