GURGAON: Students of a polytechnic in Manesar and villagers blocked traffic on NH-8 for an hour on Tuesday after they saw a truck allegedly carrying beef. Before it was noticed, the truck had broken down following a tyre puncture.
Though police were yet to confirm the nature of the meat in the truck headed for a Delhi-based packaging unit, the villagers and students came out on the road raising slogans against cow slaughter on NH-8 and blocked the traffic.
The protesters beat up the driver and helper, who somehow managed to flee the spot.
Gurgaon police dispersed the crowds but as tension continued to simmer, police were deployed on the spot.
"We don't yet know it was cow meat. Students and some local residents had blocked the highway but we reached and controlled things within 20 minutes," said
Rahul Sharma, DCP (South).
Recently, there was a lot of violence and arson after a youth, Vikrant Yadav, member of the 'gau-raksha samiti', was killed by cow smugglers. Following the killing, locals had blocked the roads and had even torched 15 trucks carrying cows.
