PONDA: Tyofil Lakara, 43, a native of Dharmjaigarh in Chhattisgarh, has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife Melo, 48, at their rented premises at Naikawaddo, Adcolna in Ponda on Friday night.
He has been remanded in police custody for eight days for further investigation. Police said the motive behind the alleged murder is not yet known.
On Saturday morning, Lakara took Melo’s body to Betki primary health centre, saying that she was unconscious.
She was declared ‘brought dead’ at the health centre.
Ponda police retrieved the body from Betki health centre and sent it to Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital at Bambolim for an autopsy. Ponda PI Vijaykumar Chodankar said forensic experts at GMC revealed that the cause of death was strangulation and smothering.
Based on the autopsy report, Ponda police have filed a case of murder.
Quoting their house owner, Chodankar said that they were quarreling frequently, but the regular husband-wife quarrel escalated on Friday resulting in the incident.
The body has been preserved at the mortuary of GMC.
