PANAJI: Chief minister
Pramod Sawant, in a reply tabled in the ongoing assembly session, stated that 88% of the construction on the first phase of the permanent campus of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa, at Cuncolim is complete. Sawant has said that the NIT will enable the Goa government to establish an educational hub in the state in the future.
“The government has acquired land measuring 4.6 lakh sqm within Cunc-olim village of Salcete taluka, incurring an expenditure of Rs 37 crore, and transferred the same to MHRD/NITG-Society free of cost for setting up the permanent campus of NIT Goa.
The institute has undertaken construction of the permanent campus at its cost, which is almost 88% complete,” saidthe chief minister.
The NIT became operational in Goa in 2010 and has been functioning from its temporary campus at the Goa Engineering College campus at Farmagudi since then.
Sawant stated in the reply that the NIT being established in Goa is highly beneficial to Goan students as 40% of the seats at NIT Goa are exclusively reserved for students from the state.
“Goan students will be able to acquire a BTech degree from a national-level reputed institution, thereby enabling them to excel in various technical fields globally. Having an NIT may help in improving the standard of education of other professional colleges in the state of Goa and would also further facilitate the government’s plan to setup an educational hub in the state,” said Sawant.
The National Institute of Technology’s infrastructure will contribute to the socio-economic development of the surrounding areas and provide more business and employment opportunities to the locals, he said.
