Zoo to get a facelift
NEW DELHI: The Delhi zoo may get a major facelift very soon, thanks to the action plan laid down by its new director. Among the host of visitor-friendly measures to be adopted include creating more lawns for seating purposes, overhaul of the drinking water system and organising alternative modes of transport for tours inside the zoo complex.
Said zoo director D N Singh, who took charge of office recently: "Keeping in mind the complaints of visitors, we have decided to lay more emphasis on the hygiene aspect.

For instance, we have already ordered cleaning of all the drinking water points meant for visitors."
Currently, the zoo doesn't have adequate seating facilities for visitors who want to relax during their 6-km-long tour. "Often visitors, especially children, feel tired while take a tour of the zoo. They end up shortening their trip and only go for the popular animals.
We have identified about five to six pockets where we plan to create specially-designed lawns where people can sit and relax," said Singh.Singh added that mostly, visitors can't afford to take trolleys, the only mode of transport inside the zoo.
"We will look for alternate modes of transport. Our rickshaw service is already in place, we just need to assess the situation better and increase the number, if need be," he said.
There are some good news that animals can cheer too. For one, the main white tiger enclosure has been extended to create more space for the inmates. Said chief veterinarian Dr Panneer Selvam: "Earlier, the main enclosure was just one-and-a-half acre big. Now, we have some 200 metres in all for the seven animals housed there." The zoo has another white tiger enclosure which houses four animals.
