NEW DELHI: In just a week, the Delhi Zoo has reportedly witnessed three animal deaths allegedly due to negligence on the part of zoo officials.According to reliable sources, two young leopard cats were born in the zoo on Friday. "But instead of separating them from their parents, they were still kept inside the same enclosure. By Friday evening, they were found dead," the source said. When contacted, a zoo official said: "Generally, the first 10-15 days after a baby’s birth are crucial.
In this case, the mother probably could not take proper care of them, hence they died a few hours later."
On Monday, there was another death, this time reportedly of a nilgai. A zoo worker said: "The nilgai died of injuries inflicted after a fight with another nilgai. The intense heat conditions made it worse for the animal to survive."Only in April, the Delhi Zoo had procured five leopard cats — three male and two female — from Guwahati zoo. Leopard cat is a scheduled animal under the Wildlife Protection Act. Simply put, it means that it has been accorded the highest protection among other wild animals and trade in any such animal is completely banned.
