NEW DELHI: First the online booking of tickets and now the e-ticketing system. Railways' passenger reservation system (PRS) seems to have come of age. For, as per a new system, travellers will be able to book as well as print their train tickets through the computer. Starting August 12, 2005, the system will completely do away with long queues for ticket reservation.
Said a northern railways official: "E-ticketing has been introduced for passenger's convenience.

For years, people had to come to the PRS, now this is an effort to bring the PRS to the people."
E-tickets can be booked at www.irctc.co.in. After registering at the website, passengers will have to fill an online reservation form. Once that is done, the electronic reservation slip (ERS) can be printed and used as a ticket. "After filling up the reservation form, the passenger is asked to submit a proof of identity, which could be PAN, driving licence, voter's identity card or an ID issued by the Central or the state government. The identification is important," said the official.
E-ticketing will not only decongest the reservation counters but also enableadvance booking at a short notice. "One can book tickets through the system even hours before the departure of the train," said the official.
Passengers can also cancel their tickets online. "The money will be refunded to the passenger's account without him having to come to the railway station," he said.
