NEW DELHI: In yet another incident of burglary in northeast district, burglars broke open the lock of the main door of a temple in A-Block of Jhilmil Colony on Monday night and decamped with cash and jewellery worth more than Rs 2.5 lakh. Several small idols placed beside the presiding deity are also missing.
According to head priest Rashik Bihari, who stays in an rented accommodation close to the Laxmi Narayan temple, he had left for his house on Monday night around 9.30pm after locking the main entrance.
Next morning, when he came to open the temple portals, he found the locks of the gate broken. "The entire temple was ransacked," said Bihari.
According to Bihari, 13 silver crowns, two sliver chattras (umbrellas) and 20 small idols were missing. "Seven cash boxes were broken open and the total cash stolen may run into several thousand of rupees,'' claimed Bihari.
"We have registered a case of burglary and investigation is on. It seems like an insider's job and we are questioning a number of people,'' said a senior police officer.
Recently, there has been a spate of break-ins in the trans-Yamuna region. A policeman's house was also targeted on Sunday.
