DEHRADUN: Police opened fire to disperse protesters gathered in front of Yoga guru Ramdev's Patanjali Food and Herbal Park in the Padartha area of Haridwar district on Thursday morning after the death of an employee, who was injured while working in the unit.
The locals demanded for a compensation to next of kin.
In a clash between the protesters and police, five vehicles were damaged and many policemen received injuries.
The locals resorted to violence and started brick-batting on the police and CISF staff, deployed on duty at the unit. Five vehicles were damaged and many cops were injured. The police and the CISF staff had to open fire to disperse the gathering.
Monu Kumar, a resident of Nandpur village of the district, got injured after his arm reportedly got trapped in a machine of the unit on Wednesday evening. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment, but he died before reaching it.
Confirming the fact, IG Garhwal Sanjay Gunjyal told TOI, “A case has been registered against people involved in the violence on Thursday morning and efforts are on to arrest them.” He maintained that the police and CISF staff had to open fire as the locals refused to call off the protest despite the repeated requests and had resorted to violence.
According to the senior police official, the situation returned to normalcy in the afternoon hours. “Efforts were being made to bring both parties of a consensus, however, those involved in unlawful activities would not be spared,” he added.
In May 2015, a clash was witnessed outside Patanjali Food and Herbal Park between the staff and local transporters. A local was killed and six others were injured in the clash that erupted over the demand of giving preference to local transporters while carrying products of the herbal food park. Ramdev’s brother Ram Bharat had been arrested in the incident.
