COIMBATORE: Police are on the lookout for a 10-member gang that waylaid two staff of a Kerala-based jewellery firm and robbed them of 350 sovereigns of gold ornaments and 243 grams of silver ornaments on Monday morning.
CR Arjun and TS Wilfred, employees of Kalyan Jewellers at Thrissur in
Kerala, were transporting the jewellery to its Coimbatore branch in an SUV, police sources said.
“When they were at KG Chavadi, a 10-member gang followed the SUV in two cars and hit behind it. When the staff stopped the SUV, the gang members attacked them and took away the jewellery. They left with the SUV, leaving the duo on the road,” a police officer said.
The stranded men informed the Coimbatore rural police, who alerted stations in Tirupur, the Nilgiris and Erode. But police were not able to find the gang. Police have collected CCTV footage from the area and formed four special teams to nab the miscreants, superintendent of police R Pandiarajan said.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Kalyan Jewellers said that jewellery worth 98.05lakh was stolen from its vehicle on the way from Thrissur to Coimbatore. Chairman and managing director TS Kalyanaraman said that necessary information was provided to the authorities for swift action and recovery of the stolen goods.
