Jayalalithaa announces Rs 50 lakh for Satish Sivalingam who won gold at CWG

Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday announced a reward of Rs 50 lakh to Satish Kumar Sivalingam who won a gold medal in weightlifting at Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday night.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday announced a reward of Rs 50 lakh to Satish Kumar Sivalingam who won a gold medal in weightlifting at Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday night.
Satish, 22, lifted a total of 328kg (149+179) to pip the 2010 CWG gold medallist Ravi Katulu, who had to be content with a silver medal.

“You have made both the nation and Tamil Nadu proud by winning a gold medal and setting a new Commonwealth Games record.

Kindly accept my heartiest congratulations on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu on this splendid achievement,” Jayalalithaa said in her letter to Satish Kumar on Monday.
“What is even more remarkable is that you have won a gold medal at the first International event of this scale that you have participated in,” she added.
In December 2011, Jayalalithaa announced that sportspersons from the state who won gold at the Commonwealth Games would be given a Rs 50-lakh reward. “You will now be eligible to receive this cash incentive. I congratulate you and all those who have contributed to your success and wish you many more such laurels on behalf the country and Tamil Nadu in future,” she wrote him in the letter.
Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah also greeted Satish and expressed the hope that he would bring more laurels to the country. The Governor said it was Satish's hard work that had fetched him the gold medal.
Political party leaders, including DMK chief M Karunanidhi and PMK founder S Ramadoss also greeted him.
