HC restrains police from filing chargesheet against YouTuber
Chennai: Madras high court on Monday restrained the Chennai police from filing the final report in an attempt-to-murder case registered against You Tuber Savukku Shankar. The case was registered against him and four others on charges of attacking police while Shankar was being escorted to Puzhal Central prison after he was arrested in another case from Andhra Pradesh.
Passing the interim order, Justice M Nirmal Kumar adjourned the hearing to June 19 for the prosecution to file its response to the plea moved by Shankar seeking to quash the FIR.
The issue pertains to a case registered against Shankar for allegedly extorting money from a film producer. He was arrested on Dec 13, 2025, and was subsequently released on interim bail on medical grounds.
While the bail expired on March 25, Shankar failed to surrender and absconded. On April 8, he was arrested in Ongole, Andhra Pradesh. While he was being taken to the Puzhal prison, his accomplices K Malathi, S Gopinath, Praveen and Raju arrived in a car and started a quarrel with the police and pelting stones at them.
An FIR was registered against Shankar and four others on April 8 under Sections 296(b) (uttering obscene words), 125 (indulging in acts endangering the personal safety of others), 132 (using criminal force to deter public servant), 109(1) (attempt to murder), and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the BNS.
