Gang barges into Triplicane house, hacks rowdy to death

CHENNAI: A five-member gang barged into the house of a 25-year-old history-sheeter on Mattankuppam Canal Road in Triplicane and hacked him to death late on Thursday. Police suspect S Arivazhagan could have been murdered by the sons of a neighbour, who was manhandled by him recently.


Police said Arivazhagan was home alone and having dinner when the gang attacked him with sickles. The gang members who came in an autorickshaw escaped immediately after the incident. Police sent his body to a government hospital for postmortem examination.

During a recent fight with a woman from the neighbourhood, Arivazhagan allegedly tore her dress. Soon after the murder of Arivazhagan, the woman’s two sons went missing, causing suspicion among police personnel that they may have been involved in the crime.

Arivazhagan was involved in cases of attempt to murder, ganja peddling and robbery in Triplicane and Zam Bazaar police station areas. He was caught in a ganja peddling case and came out of prison this week. “We have collected CCTV camera footage from the area. The Anna Square police have formed special teams to nab the suspects,” said an investigating officer.
