Police identified the victims as engineer S Arun Kumar, 30, and his engineer-wife A Niranjani, 26, of Katharipalayam. P Vinoth Kumar, 27, was driving the vehicle. Arun Kumar and Niranjani, both software engineers, were residing at Pallikkaranai after their recent marriage.
The accident took place when the couple and their relatives were returning to Chennai after participating in a family function at Katteri Kuppam on Saturday night. Police said the car driver, Vinoth Kumar, could not control the vehicle as he tried to take a turn at high speed. The vehicle swerved off the road and hit a tree near Agaram joint road near Pallikonda around 4 am.
Villagers, who rushed to the spot, found three persons dead on the spot. One injured person, K Silambarasan, 24, was rushed to Ambur government hospital.
“It is an unfortunate accident. The youth is lucky to be alive,” said S Arumugam, 46, of Agaram. The bodies were shifted to Vellore government hospital from Ambur government hospital for postmortem, police said.
“Rash driving is the main reason behind this accident. The car was damaged very badly since the driver was unable to stop it before hitting the tree,” a police officer said. Arun Kumar worked as safety engineer with ED group of companies and Niranjani was a software engineer with Airtel.
