One of the assailants, Satish, hit him from behind, and the other, Jagadeesh, tried to snatch the bag from him. Saravanan refused to give up the bag and began shouting. The duo stabbed him, grabbed the bag and escaped.
Police got a detailed description of the men from Saravanan and tracked down Satish, who led them to Jagadeesh. “Both of them were taken into custody and grilled. They confessed to the crime,” said Washermenpet deputy commissioner of police R Kannappan.
Saravanan works as a supervisor in Khan Chicken Centre. He and his assistant Suresh, 28, used to supply chicken to shops every Sunday. Saravanan would collect the cash in the evening.
During interrogation, Jagadeesh and Satish said two of their friends, Perumal, 24, and Prakash, 25, of Bharathi Nagar in Korukkupet, were also involved in the crime.
“Perumal, who runs Super Chicken Centre on Poondi Thangammal Street in Royapuram, used to get chicken from Khan Chicken Centre. He devised the plan as he was aware that Saravanan would be carrying a huge amount of cash. He told his friend Prakash, who needed money for his sister’s marriage. They roped in Jagadeesh, who runs a mechanic shop in Royapuram, and Satish, who worked as a salesperson in a textile shop,” DCP Kannappan said.
Perumal paid Saravanan Rs 13,000 on Sunday for chicken and then informed Jagadeesh and Satish about Saravanan’s movements. Perumal and Prakash followed Saravanan on a bike.
Royapuram police have registered a case. Jagadeesh and Satish were later remanded in judicial custody after being produced before a magistrate court in the city.
