Punjab reports 283 farm fires, most cases in Ferozepur
Bathinda: Punjab reported 283 farm fire cases on Saturday, taking the count to 9,326. The state reported the highest farm fire cases in the day out of the five states. Ferozepur turned out to be the worst-affected district with a maximum 891 crop residue burning cases till May 16, followed by 737 in Bathinda, 726 in Moga, 711 in Tarn Taran, 692 in Amritsar and 673 in Sangrur. Legal action is continuing, which includes registration of FIRs, marking red entries in land records and imposing environmental compensation against the farmers.Haryana reported 26 farm fires in the day, while Madhya Pradesh reported 155 and Uttar Pradesh reported 79 crop residue burning cases on Saturday.The total farm fire cases in the season so far were reported close to 65k at 64,955, and out of it 37,017 burning cases were reported from Madhya Pradesh, which turns out to be close to 57% of the total burning cases so far in the wheat harvesting season.As per ‘Consortium for Research on Agroecosystem Monitoring and Modeling From Space' (CREAMS), MP reported close to 50% of the crop residue burning cases in the last five years, as out of the total 263,494 cases reported from 2022 to May 16, 2026, 131,703 were reported from MP, followed by 61,202 from UP, 57,303 from Punjab, 13,107 from Haryana and 179 from Delhi.The maximum 4,287 burning cases were reported from Videsha district of Madhya Pradesh, as 100 districts of MP, UP, Punjab and Haryana reported over 100 burning cases each till May 16.Earlier, during the paddy harvesting in the 2025 kharif season, Madhya Pradesh remained at the top in stubble burning, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Out of these 731 FIRs, the maximum 187 FIRs have been filed in Moga district, followed by 154 in Amritsar, 71 FIRs in Sangrur, 60 in Mansa, 59 FIRs in Patiala, 51 in Fazilka, 45 in Barnala, 36 in Kapurthala, 30 in Gurdaspur, 15 in Bathinda, 13 in Faridkot, four in Jalandhar, three in Muktsar, two in Pathankot and one in Ludhiana. Seven hundred eighty red entries have been made in land records, with 13 in a day on May 15. Rs 91.54 lakh environmental compensation has been imposed in 1,950 cases of farm fire in the state. Out of the total environmental compensation, Rs 555,000 has been realised. Warning/show-cause notices have been issued to 130 nodal/supervisory officers. MSID:: 131139204 413 |
