CHANDIGARH: Members of Students for Society (SFS), who are seeking a check on police presence inside the Panjab University (PU) campus, submitted a draft regarding the same to the dean student welfare (DSW) Navdeep Goyal on Tuesday. Various student bodies had asked PU authorities to regulate police presence after the March 18 lathi-charge on students protesting against fee hike in Panjab University.

Students were asked to draft a proposal regarding the same and submit it to the university. Vice-chancellor Arun K Grover has assured students of a mechanism for police intervention in the university.
According to the proposal, the students will only interact with university security personnel during routine activities. In case of a failure of dialogue between a particular students' group and PU administration during rallies or protests, the university could seek an interaction with all student organizations. In case of raids, PU may ask for cop presence, if needed. The students have also submitted that cops visiting the campus should follow a dress code, and PU authorities should maintain a record of the personnel's identities. They also mentioned that representatives from all student bodies should meet the PU administration once each month.
"Police have no role in the university, and unnecessary intervention needs to be avoided. The dissenting voice of students should be dealt democratically without intervention of the police. The present efforts being made will create an environment where students and authorities will be able to address the problems in a democratic way," said SFS president Arishdeep Singh.
