Burail jail gets meeting room, radio station

Punjab governor-cum-UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit inaugurated a modern mulakat (meeting) room and radio station-cum-public addressing system in Burail Model Jail, which is celebrating its golden jubilee.

Chandigarh: Punjab governor-cum-UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit inaugurated a modern mulakat (meeting) room and radio station-cum-public addressing system in Burail Model Jail, which is celebrating its golden jubilee.
Jail officials said 16 new meeting rooms have been set up where relatives can meet prisoners. Both sides will be separated by a glass panel. They said that prisoners' pre-recorded messages, life experiences and topics will be played through a radio station on the premises.

As many as 201 CCTV cameras have been installed to keep a tab on activities of prisoners.
The Burail Model Jail was initially set up as a sub-jail in 1972. Later, it was upgraded as district jail and Central Jail in 1975 and 1990 respectively. Burail jail has initiated several schemes for the betterment of inmates during the 50 years of its inception. A number of skill-based training courses have been started to make prisoners self-reliant after their release. Jail barracks were named after eminent personalities and freedom fighters. Food and furniture items being prepared by jail inmates are being sold through the Nav Srijan outlet in Sector 22.
UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit appreciated the literacy program and other initiatives of jail authorities. He said these initiatives would help prisoners return to the mainstream. The UT administrator also made a grant of Rs 5 lakh for skill development and reformative activities. tnn
