CHANDIGARH: Leader of opposition in Punjab assembly Partap Singh Bajwa on Friday sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in resolving the long pending dispute over the river waters between Punjab and
Haryana.
While referring to PM Modi’s statement asking the states to cooperate with each other in resolving river water disputes, Bajwa said the Prime Minister had the golden opportunity to correct many wrongs done against Punjab to deny the state its bona fide right over its river waters.
“The central government has no direct role in mediating between two or more states if there were disputes over river waters. However, the Centre can definitely play a neutral role in persuading the BJP-led Haryana government not to stay adamant over the construction of Satluj-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal,” said Bajwa.
He said Modi should listen to the voice of his own party leaders from Punjab stating that Punjab has the first right over its river waters and the state could not be forced either by the apex court or by the Centre to share its natural resources, including river waters, with its neighbouring state against its will.
