Bhubaneswar: The state government on Thursday appointed weightlifter and Commonwealth Games gold medalist K Ravi Kumar as DSP in the state police.
According to an official statement, he is the first sportsperson in the state to be appointed to the top position. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik approved the proposal for Kumar's appointment.
The 29-year weightlifter, who hails from Berhampur had won gold medal in men's 69 kg weightlifting event during the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
Earlier, the state government announced to appoint sportspersons in state police force and PSUs which was approved by the Odisha Public Service Commission.
So far, the state government appointed 59 sportsperson in different lower posts in the state police. Recently, the chief minister appointed Odia sprinters Dutee Chand as assistant manager in Odisha Mining Corporation and Shrabani Nanda as junior manager in the Odisha Hydro Power Corporation.
