Odisha: Man held for ‘abetting’ wife’s suicide

BERHAMPUR: Police on Saturday arrested a 30-year-old mason for allegedly abetting the suicide of his wife at Gopalpur in Ganjam district on Friday afternoon. The accused was identified as Sushant Kumar Das of Mandiapalli.
His wife, Tukuni (26), had allegedly consumed pesticides near Gopalpur police station. She died in MKCG Medical College and Hospital here on Friday night.Preliminary inquiry revealed that Sushant and Tukuni got married 12 years ago. They have two sons. But the couple had been living separately due to marital discord.
“The woman had borrowed money from some people which she could not repay. The exact reason for taking the extreme step was yet to be ascertained. However, we suspect she committed suicide as her husband neglected her,” said Siba Shankar Mohapatra, SDPO, Berhampur Sadar.
