Baker’s Last-Minute heroics deny India win
Bhopal:
India held to a 2-2 draw by Australia in an entertaining opener of the four-match friendly series at the Udhav Das Mehta (Bhai Ji) Central SAI Centre on Friday. Under-18 squads from both countries are contesting a four-match series in Bhopal.
Australia stunned the hosts with a lightning start when Jett Johnstone tapped home in the second minute, giving the visitors an early lead. India responded positively and restored parity in the 11th minute through Akash Deep, who finished clinically after good work in the attacking third.
The home side grew into the contest and seized control late in the first half. Deepak Prakash Toppo swept in from close range on the stroke of half-time to put India 2-1 ahead, rewarding sustained pressure and quick interplay down the flanks.
The second half saw end-to-end action as both sides probed for a winner. India fashioned a handful of promising openings but were unable to extend their advantage, while Australia’s substitutes injected fresh impetus into their attack.
The visitors’ persistence paid off in dramatic fashion when substitute Franky Baker bundled home a last-gasp equaliser in the 60th minute, ensuring the spoils were shared.
The match offered encouraging signs for both teams — India impressed with their slick build-up play and finishing in the first half, while Australia demonstrated resilience and a never-say-die attitude. Coaches from both camps will take positives, with attention now turning to the series’ second encounter.
The teams meet again for their second clash on Sunday at 7 PM at the same venue.
