bangalore: bangalore city police clamped night curfew on jagajeevanram nagar (j j nagar) after a fresh bout of violence erupted on saturday. the curfew will be in force till sunday morning. eight persons received stab injuries on friday night in padarayanapura coming under j j nagar police station limits. three of them have been operated upon and their condition is said to be stable.
on saturday, people belonging to two communities clashed near narasimhaiah compound in the area in which a youth''s neck was slashed with a knife. his condition is said to be critical. the police said the troubled area continued to witness stray incidents of stone-throwing and attack with soda bottles. the local mla and former minister v somanna who visited the area on saturday morning was chased away by an angry mob which dispersed after a lathi-charge. eight policemen, including dcp (west) g.b. chebbi and sub-inspector nanjunde gowda, suffered injuries in the melee. director-general of police v.v. bhaskar, joint commissioners jeevan kumar gaonkar and jyothi prakash mirjee visited the area. more than 40 people have been arrested in connection with violence, bhaskar told reporters. prohibitory orders have also been promulgated in j j nagar which was the hotbed of violence during the 1994 anti-urdu news agitation and the 1991 cauvery riots. the rapid action force has been deployed. gaonkar said a decision on whether to extend the curfew will be taken after studying the situation.
