MADIKERI: Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama on Tuesday inaugurated the six-storey monastery, built at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore.
He also unfurled the history of his escape from Tibet and recalled the help received from then Karnataka Chief Minister S. Nijalingappa in sanctioning them the land.
He said Buddhism was "only a way of life and not a religion".
He said 39,000 Tibetans were settled in Karnataka and they had built four huge temples here.
Addressing the gathering, Home Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge lauded Tibetans as peace-loving and said they never created any law and order problems here.
He made it clear terrorists had no place in the state. Those who tried to create law and order problem are well behind bars, he said. Minister Vishwanath and MLA Basavaraju were also present.
Rotary Club golden jubilee: The Rotary Club of Madikeri will celebrate its golden jubilee on November 29 at Kavery Kalakshetra.
Addressing reporters here, Club president K.P. Ranjit said the Rotary, Madikeri was instituted on June 23, 1952.
Rotary District Governor I. Narayan and Shantaram Shetty will grace the occasion.
Gadinada utsav: The Kodagu Gadinada Utsav, which highlights the culture of Kodagu, kicked off at Ponnampet on Tuesday.
M.M. Nanaiah, Suma Vasanth, ministers, Dhananjay kumar, MP, and M.C. Nanaiah, MLC, were also present.
Meanwhile, the members of Gowda Academy, at a press conference, alleged that the district administration had ignored their community and did not invite them to showcase their talent in the utsav.
