MYSORE: East or West, NIE is the best, shouted participants after enjoying an ecstatic NIE Fun Fest, organised by The Times of India, on Thursday.Joy filled the air while bright and young minds gathered at Jagan Mohan Palace, which turned into a world of fun and learning. Some 300-plus students from various schools across Mysore city, witnesses to this first-time event here, had just one thing to say: "We want more, we want this to happen every year!"The fun fest was declared open by Mysore's child prodigy Girish A Koushik, the reigning world youth chess champion.
Mysore has now joined the NIE bandwagon, though the Fun Fest has been a huge carnival in the IT capital, with games, food stalls, colourful events and an ocean of participants from various schools every year.
With the NIE Fun Fest proving a huge success, Mysore will soon have a lot of events coming up for the young guns. Students leapt with joy, cheered team members and conquered the stage by dancing to peppy, filmy and classical compositions. They impressed the judges and won the hearts of teachers and parents. Budding artistes and writers splashed colours and composed poems on the spot, while non-participants volunteered to enthral the audience with songs and dances. The NIE (Newspaper in Education), a non-formal programme that gives education a new dimension, encourages children to learn through fun. The Fun Fest was no classroom or playground, but a world for children to enjoy their space while they displayed their skills and talents and learnt simultaneously.Times NIE was launched in 1984. The Newspaper In Education programme is the first of its kind in the country. Last year, Times NIE was awarded the 'World Young Reader Prize 2006', 'WAN World Young Reader Newspaper of the Year' and 'Best Students Newspaper' by the World Association of Newspapers. Out of 115 countries, Times NIE programme has been rated the best in the world.
