bangalore: what started as an awareness campaign on measures to be taken during a natural disaster has been extended to educate people about the steps to be taken even during military attacks, fire accidents and nuclear bombings. the directorate of civil defence, fire services & home guards observed the national disaster reduction day, which is the outcome of the international decade for natural disaster reduction (idndr), a campaign started by the united nations to help people take care of themselves during crises.

idndr began in 1990 and thereafter, the second wednesday of every october has been observed as world disaster reduction day. home minister mallikarjun m. kharge, minister of state for higher education g. parameshwar and director general, civil defence, fire services & home guards jai prakash saw a live demonstration of first-aid, rescue and fire-fighting by the home guards and civil defence personnel at the hockey stadium on wednesday. kharge stressed on such live demonstrations at every village. ``to stop terrorism, at least one member of each family should join the civil defence services.'' parameshwar said the government will consider making ncc compulsory in all schools and colleges to imbibe discipline and patriotism.
