Congress candidate Sudha Lingareddy was elected as the president of Dharwad Zilla Panchayat unopposed on Saturday.
DHARWAD: Congress candidate Sudha Lingareddy was elected as the president of Dharwad Zilla Panchayat unopposed on Saturday. Sudha was the only candidate to file her nomination on Saturday when the deadline for filing nomination expired at 12 noon. Accompanied by her supporters, Sudha arrived at the ZP office. Subhas Dyamakkannavar and Shivalingappa Chikkannavar proposed her name.
Sudha's election was formally announced by Belgaum division's regional commissioner Amita Prasad. She will hold office till January end 2008.
Sudha, representing Shalavadi in Navalgund taluk, is the seniormost member in the House and is serving her second term in zilla panchayat. The election was necessitated as Congress candidate Geeta Patil, who was facing no-confidence motion, resigned before taking a test on the floor of the House. Fourteen members, including eight from Congress, had submitted a memorandum to the ZP CEO expressing loss of confidence in her and also in ZP vicepresident Basayya Gangadharmath of Janata Dal (Secular).
Sudha Lingareddy is considered as a loyalist of Congress leader H K Patil while Geeta is said to belong to the group opposed to H K Patil. While Geeta quit the post, Gangadharmath hanged on only to be defeated on Wednesday by 13-9 votes. While six members of JD(S) and three from BJP voted against the motion, nine Congress members, three Independents and a lone Janata Party member voted in favour of the motion. The date for election to the post of vice-president is yet to be announced. Though all the six members in JD(S) voted against the no-confidence motion, there are party members who are aspiring to become vicepresidents. Nijanagouda Patil of JD(S) is a strong contender and he enjoys the support of Independents and Congress members. It is to be seen whether the JD(S) leadership will field him and strike a pact with the Congress to hold the vice-president's post. If the JD(S) fields some other candidate then it will not be a surprise if there is rebellion in the party.
