BANGALORE: The city has received abundant rainfall this month, exceeding that recorded in June and July, as well as the expected amount. On Tuesday, over 66 mm rain was received.
The 83 mm recorded in a day earlier this month is the highest this season. The highest rainfall ever recorded in a day was in 1890, when the city received 163 mm. In the past five years, the average rainfall has been 92 mm per day.
Considering this, Tuesday's rain is not unusual for the season, said A Muthuchami, meteorological department director .
At present, there is light wind movement which has induced thunderstorms. Warm and sunny days followed by evening rain is the pattern recorded over the past few days. Clear skies in the daytime increase the temperature, leading to a reduction in pressure in and around South Karnataka. This is what causes the evening rain, he added.
The city has received 240 mm rain this month, which is in excess of the expected 137 mm. "This year, the city has received good amount of rain and more showers are expected in the coming days," Muthuchami said. The monsoon is likely to recede by the second week of October.
