All seats filled at college offeringfree MBBS edu
Bengaluru: All seats at Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SMSIMSR), which is offering free MBBS education to 80% of its students, have been filled.
SMSIMSR in Chikkaballapur district has been in the news after it offered its government and private quota seats for free. The college opened this year. Of its 50 seats, 40% (20 seats) are under government quota and another 40% under private quota.

While seven seats come under NRI quota, there are three management ones. Seats under government and private quota come without tuition or hostel fees. A seat under the other two quotas costs Rs 40 lakh a year.
But here’s the catch: The MBBS students have to serve five years of compulsory service in any of the free hospitals established by the institution or its allied trusts. The college will pay salary as per the norms. If the students fail to comply with the required service, they have to pay double the NRI quota fee as penalty within six weeks of the college issuing notice on the same.
While the first round of counselling saw a tepid response, the numbers picked up in the second round. There was one seat available in the stray vacancy round, which was also picked up by a student in the all-India rank range of 3.05 lakh. The result of the stray vacancy round was declared on Thursday night. However, sources said many students were unaware of the clauses until they submitted their documents.
The college declined to respond to queries from TOI. According to the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), there are 69 NRI/management quota MBBS seats that are still not allotted among all the colleges. While September 30 is the last date for admissions, KEA said it will take special permission to hold one more round. “We’ll wait to see whether any of the allotted seats also fall vacant. We will seek permission from the government to extend the last date of admission and hold one more round of counselling,” said Ramya S, executive director, KEA.

EWS quota: Seat vacancies persist at pvt engg colleges
The addition of seats in engineering colleges in Goa to accommodate the economically weaker sections (EWS) quota has resulted in a high number of vacancies. For the academic year 2023-24, 250 seats have remained unfilled. However, officials state that this is not due to a lack of interest in engineering programs, but rather the result of the additional seats. The EWS quota does not provide fee concessions, but the DJ-Gift scheme introduced by the Chief Minister has created a level-playing field. Seats in other professional programs like medicine and dentistry are not experiencing the same vacancies.
KEA to re-allot medical seats to Mangaluru students
The Karnataka Examinations Authority will conduct counseling for 150 first-year MBBS students whose admissions to GR Medical College were declared illegal. The students will be reassigned seats in other colleges. The High Court has directed the Directorate of Medical Education to complete the redistribution of seats and provide an affidavit. Students must bring their hall tickets, admission documents, photo ID cards, and related documents for the re-allotment process. The seat matrix for re-allotment has been published on the KEA website. The case is scheduled for further consideration on October 3.
