Heritage walk in Sambhajinagar today to mark 360th anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj’s visit
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A special heritage walk has been scheduled for Sunday morning to commemorate the 360th anniversary of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's visit to the city.Organised jointly by the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), the walk will begin at 7am from Makai Gate. It will pass through the historic Jaisingpura locality — highlighting its significant landmarks — before concluding at the centuries-old Shri Jaisingh Shiv Temple in Parakram Galli.History scholar Sanket Kulkarni, citing archival records, said Shivaji Maharaj halted in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (then Aurangabad) during his journey to Agra following the Treaty of Purandar. "He left Raigad on March 5, 1666, and reached the city about a week later. He stayed at the encampment of Mirza Raja Jaisingh in Jaisingpura. Contemporary accounts describe large crowds gathering to catch a glimpse of the Maharaj," he said.Marking the 360-year milestone of this historic stopover, the heritage walk would conclude with a musical tribute to Shivaji Maharaj by the ‘Nadgandharva' troupe. The civic body has urged citizens to participate in large numbers, stating that the event aims to reconnect residents with the city's rich historical legacy.
