AHMEDABAD: A metropolitan court on Wednesday granted police the remand of Brijesh Singh alias Arun Kumar Singh Thakur for 14 days. Latif had escaped after police bust the racket of arms supply to Gujarat to spread terror in order to avenge Babri demolition. Thakur is also accused of helping Latif to go to Pakistan via Nepal and of disposing off the arms cache provided by Latif.
Latif, Dawood and Sharif Khan alias Dawood Shaharyar had allegedly conspired to take revenge and to spread terror.
On their behest weapons like AK-56, thousands of cartridges, hundred of magazines and hand-grenades were distributed in various parts of Ahmedabad. In serial blasts that took place in January 1993, two persons lost their lives and 104 sustained injuries. In this case, 67 accused have been arrested, while 15 others are still on the run, including Dawood. While seeking 30-day remand of Thakur under the Tada case registered in June 1994, the city crime branch stated that he may be aware of whereabouts of Dawood and other absconders, and through him the police could reach the other culprits.
In this case, 37 AK-56, 6,009 cartridges, 85 magazines and 27 hand-grenades have been recovered, but 10 AK-56 and ammunition are traced. Thakur can furnish this information too. Thakur's test identification parade has to be carried out by one of the accused persons, Gulam Mohammed alias Gulal, who had in a confessional statement recorded in 1996 revealed his name. Besides, the police want to know whether Thakur has links with other terrorists or terrorist outfits. Metropolitan magistrate, D S Trivedi granted 14 days' custodial interrogation of Thakur on these, particularly to probe the riots conspiracy and spread terrorism after the Babri Masjid demolition.
