Surrogate mom, her alleged rapist appear before cops

AHMEDABAD: The woman who is a surrogate mother and the man she had earlier accused of raping her, appeared before crime branch officials on Wednesday. The woman had accused Rajkumar Jadav, the son of a policeman, of raping her at his home in Nadiad. She has already changed her statement twice.
On Wednesday, she told the police that she already had two children from her first husband, who now lives in Rajasthan, but they separated and she started living with Rajkumar while she was pregnant with the third child.
She had earlier claimed that her first surrogate baby was for Rajkumar. She later claimed the child was the result of her physical intimacy with him. Now, she has claimed that the baby is that of her estranged husband. She has told the police that the baby was passed off as a surrogate child to a couple in Mumbai.
Police officials grilled Rajkumar following which he confirmed all the statements made by the woman. "He says that they had planned to get married, but he wanted her to get a divorce first. The woman, however, was not ready to go to Rajasthan to complete the formalities," said a crime branch official.
"She claims to have then approached Dr Bharat Atit to get her pregnancy aborted. However, Atit suggested she give birth to the baby and hand it over it to a childless couple. She claims Atit helped her sell the child," the official said. "Rajkumar and the woman then realized this could be a way of making money and the woman had subsequently enrolled for surrogacy at Atit's clinic. She claims she is now pregnant with a surrogate child meant for a childless couple."
Crime branch officials summoned Atit for a third time.
"We want to ask him where the first baby had been sold and also to show the contract papers that validate the woman's first surrogacy. Atit had initially feigned ignorance and had said he did not know the woman. Later, he said that the woman's current pregnancy was through surrogacy.
However, he had insisted that he knew nothing about the woman's first pregnancy," a crime branch official added.
Police officials have also recovered a photo of the woman in Atit's records. "This is evidence that the woman knows Atit and that she had got enrolled for Atit's surrogacy programme," the official added.
