AHMEDABAD: After a brief lull, rain played havoc on city roads on Sunday. Major parts in the western Ahmedabad were flooded after more than two hours of incessant rain, the worst affected areas being Vastrapur, Satellite, Bodakdev, Memnagar and Helmet circle.
A BRTS bus was partially submerged at Akhabarnagar underpass. The stranded passengers were rescued and BRTS buses were diverted when the service resumed late in the evening.
According to AMC authorities, Memnagar alone received six inches of rain.
Residents of Bopal were literally under house arrest after the heavy downpour. Palak Patel of Arohi Twin Bungalows said, "There was flooding all around our colony and also on the arterial roads."
Sardar Patel Ring Road also saw vehicles stranded bumper-to-bumper for at least one km. The road is pothole-riddled making traffic movement slow. The condition was no better on SG Highway and CG Road either.
It was a busy day for Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) as they received a call from a private firm near Dudheshwar water tank. A drainage line was being repaired when the rain started. The water accumulated around the pit, endangering two workers digging inside.
One of the labourers later died. Deputy municipal commissioner IK Patel said, "We have lodged a police complaint against the owner Badri Prasad who let the labourers into the gutter. The sewerage did not belong to AMC. Although both the labourers were rushed to VS Hospital after being rescued, one of them, Amar Solanki, died."
Besides animal has to be rescued from Behrampura, Danilimda and Ellisbridge where a parakeet, a crow and a cow were caught in waterlogged areas. Officials also fished out the body of a three-month old child from Sabarmati river near Ellisbridge
