'Trump should not be telling a woman what to do with her body', says Kamala Harris on abortion rights during US presidential debate

Democratic nominee Kamala Harris sharply criticized Donald Trump’s stance on abortion rights, saying, "Trump should not be telling a woman what to do with her body."

Harris criticizes Trump’s abortion bans
As the much anticipated debate unfolded, Harris used the platform to emphasize her support for reinstating Roe v. Wade, which Trump’s Supreme Court appointees overturned. She condemned the Trump-backed abortion bans currently in effect in over 20 states, describing them as draconian measures that criminalize medical care and offer life sentences for providers. These bans, Harris argued, make no exceptions for rape or incest victims, effectively stripping survivors of their autonomy.

“Now, in over 20 states, there are Trump abortion bans which make it criminal for a doctor or nurse to provide health care,” Harris stated. “In one state, it provides prison for life. Trump abortion bans that make no exception, even for rape and incest, which, understand what that means—a survivor of a crime of violation to their body does not have the right to make a decision about what happens to their body.”

Harris denounces Trump’s policies as 'immoral'
Harris denounced these measures as “immoral” and argued that “one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government and Donald Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body.” She reiterated her commitment to sign legislation restoring Roe v. Wade if elected, contingent on Congressional approval.



Trump defends state-level regulation and IVF
Trump, who has endorsed the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, has argued that abortion should be regulated at the state level. He insisted he would not sign a national abortion ban, despite Harris’s warnings about his “Project 2025,” which she claims would lead to such a ban.

In a rebuttal, Trump emphasized his support for In vitro fertilisation (IVF), countering claims that he supports banning it. He noted his push for legislation in Alabama to support the procedure following legal uncertainties.
