UN nuclear watchdog says it's unable to implement its monitoring responsibilities in Iran

The UN nuclear watchdog has been unable to inspect nuclear facilities in Iran affected by the war last June according to a confidential report by the UN nuclear watchdog circulated to member states and seen Thursday by The Associated Press.

The International Atomic Energy Agency reported that it “cannot provide any information on the current size, composition or whereabouts of the stockpile of enriched uranium in Iran or whether Iran has suspended all enrichment-related activities.”

The IAEA warned that it was “unable to discharge its safeguards responsibilities” that it has under the Safeguards Agreement of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, adding that it is “indispensable and urgent” for Tehran to implement its obligations under that Treaty.

The only nuclear facility inspected in Iran by IAEA inspectors since the last report in February has been the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which was visited on June 1-3. The reactor currently running at Bushehr uses uranium from Russia enriched to 4.5%, a low level needed for power generation in such plants.

India condemns killing of UN peacekeeper in Lebanon

India condemned on Thursday the attack on peacekeepers in Lebanon, which killed a Serbian soldier serving the UN.

“India reiterates the fundamental importance of respecting the sanctity and inviolability of UN premises and personnel,” India’s UN Mission said in a statement that condemned the attack that occurred on Wednesday.

Condemning the attack that resulted in the seventh fatality since March, Secretary-General António Guterres warned that it could amount to a war crime.

His spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, said Sergeant Milovan Jovanovic, serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), was killed when a mortar hit a UN position near Marji’yun.

Two other peacekeepers, who were wounded in the attack, are being treated at a UNIFIL medical facility in south Lebanon, he said.

“Attacks on peacekeepers must stop,” Dujarric said, adding that they are grave violations of international humanitarian law.

UNIFIL said it has launched an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the peacekeeper’s death in an area of heightened tension between Israel and Hezbollah.

Hezbollah, which is backed by Tehran, increased its attacks on Israel following the Israeli bombing of Iran, which the US joined in, and faced a deadly retaliation.

Hezbollah rejects latest ceasefire agreement as Israeli strikes kill 4 in Lebanon

Hezbollah on Thursday rejected the latest ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Lebanese government, and the militant group demanded a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon as more fighting there hampered efforts to end the Iran war.

The Hezbollah announcement came as Israeli strikes killed at least four people, according to local authorities, and a U.N. peacekeeper was killed in the crossfire. An Israeli soldier was also killed in combat in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah leader Naim Kassem, in a written statement read on TV, called the negotiations “absurd, humiliating and insulting.” He said the agreement’s demand that Hezbollah fighters leave southern Lebanon under fire would mean “surrender, defeat and achieving the enemy’s goals.”

“What we are concerned about is an end to the aggression, ceasefire and Israel’s withdrawal,” he said, underscoring that Hezbollah has not made any commitment to stop fighting. “So long as our villages are not safe and are being bombed and destroyed and our people are killed," he said, northern Israel “will not be safe.”

'If Iran kills US troops, it would be a good reason to restart war': US President Trump

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that any killing of US troops by Iran would be a "good reason" to restart war.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said, "If they killed US Troops, it would be a good reason to do so...There is no navy, no air force, we have wiped out their leadership. Then you read in the fake news that they are doing really well in the war, this is unbelievable. They have 159 ships and all of them lie at the bottom of the ocean. We have taken pictures of them down there."

US President Donald Trump on Thursday slammed the House of Representatives for a "meaningless vote" designed to force him to end the Iran war and also bashed the four Republican lawmakers for supporting such an "unpatriotic thing."

On Wednesday, the US House of Representatives voted to halt Trump from taking further military action against Iran. Four Republicans also joined Democrats to vote against Trump to support the resolution, which was passed by 215 votes to 208, and now heads to the Senate.

Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said that those who voted against him would rather see the country "fail" than give him another victory.

He said, "Yesterday, in a meaningless vote, the House voted, 4 bad Republicans and all of the Dumocrats, to limit my War Powers, right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Who would do such an unpatriotic thing. They know where the negotiations stand. The Democrats are fueled by Trump Derangement Syndrome. They would rather have our Country fail than give me another, of many, victories. The four Republicans, that's a whole other story - They're GRANDSTANDERS! They should be ashamed of themselves. MAGA!!! President DJT."

Iran says it will charge service fees, not tolls, in Strait of Hormuz

Iran has said it will seek to impose service fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz in return for security-related services, rather than charging traditional transit tolls.

Iran “is not seeking to collect passage fees, transit duties, or transit rights payments,” deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi said in an interview with the semi-official Mehr news agency on Thursday.

Instead, he said Iran intends to recover costs for services provided jointly with Oman, including navigation assistance, search and rescue operations, maritime security, safety services and environmental cleanup in case of pollution.

The strategic waterway “lies entirely within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman,” Gharibabadi added, noting that both countries exercise sovereignty over the strait “under international law and the law of the sea.”

Speaking at a news conference in Montenegro, Macron said a coordination mechanism had been established between the US and France to plan the ceasefire and “monitor and ensure its implementation.”

US Iran war: Iran allows Bushehr nuclear inspection, stonewalls over uranium

Iran this week allowed inspectors from the United Nations nuclear watchdog to visit the Bushehr nuclear power plant, while continuing to deny requests for access needed to verify the condition and whereabouts of its stockpile of enriched uranium.

While the International Atomic Energy Agency welcomed Iran’s decision to grant inspectors access to the Bushehr nuclear power plant, the visit did little to ease concerns over Tehran’s stockpile of near-weapons-grade uranium, according to a report by the agency.

The report noted that the material, estimated to be sufficient for roughly a dozen nuclear warheads if further enriched, has not been independently verified for the past year.

Although IAEA inspectors carried out a three-day visit to Bushehr, “the agency has not received information from Iran regarding the status of any of its other declared nuclear activities,” according to the 10-page restricted report seen by Bloomberg.

IAEA director general Rafael Mariano Grossi renewed calls for Iran to allow inspectors to fully resume their monitoring activities and reiterated his support for a negotiated solution to the ongoing impasse involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

Iran war: Lebanese president unveils ceasefire framework

Lebanese president Joseph Aoun briefed journalists at Baabda Palace following the fourth round of US-mediated talks with Israel, describing the outcome as a significant step toward a comprehensive ceasefire.

Aoun said the negotiations had produced a statement containing provisions that were largely favourable to Lebanon, calling the current effort the “last opportunity” to secure a final and comprehensive ceasefire.

He said Lebanon would relay its response to the United States once Hezbollah and other domestic stakeholders had submitted their positions, paving the way for the next phase of the process. According to Aoun, Washington will determine the timing and mechanism of the ceasefire, with implementation potentially beginning within 24 hours of US notification of approval and the receipt of the necessary guarantees. He added that US President Donald Trump would serve as the direct guarantor of the agreement.

Aoun praised Lebanon’s negotiating team, led by Ambassador Simon Karam, for maintaining a firm stance during the talks. He said Karam temporarily suspended negotiations and refused to discuss other issues until a comprehensive ceasefire was addressed, prompting intervention by US secretary of state Marco Rubio. According to Aoun, the talks concluded with Lebanon’s position being accepted.

The president also said Lebanese officials remained in contact with international and domestic parties throughout Wednesday and into Thursday morning in an effort to consolidate support for the ceasefire, adding that several friendly countries had exerted pressure in Lebanon’s favour.

On the issue of proposed “pilot zones”, areas where the Lebanese military would deploy to test its ability to secure territory without the presence of non-state armed groups, Aoun said Lebanon had suggested East and West Zawtar, Yahmar and Qalaat al-Shaqif as initial locations due to their proximity to the Nabatieh district.

“We fight for our land and our people rooted in our obedience to our Lord – so that we shall not be slaves to anyone, and so that our generations may live their lives independently in their homeland alongside their fellow countrymen,” Naim said, according to a Hezbollah statement, as cited by Al Jazeera.

Israel Iran War: US-Iran talks hit roadblock over Tehran's upfront demand for 'liquid cash'

Diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran have run into fresh difficulties, with negotiations stalling over Tehran's demand that access to frozen assets be granted at the outset of any agreement.

According to a report by The Jerusalem Post, Iran is insisting that billions of dollars in frozen funds be partially released in the first phase of a potential deal. The demand specifically relates to the transfer of readily accessible cash before any substantive implementation steps are taken.

The disagreement has persisted despite intensive behind-the-scenes diplomatic activity aimed at narrowing differences between the two sides. Sources familiar with the talks told The Jerusalem Post that mediators have spent the past several days trying to find common ground on the issue.

Those efforts have so far failed to produce a breakthrough. Iranian negotiators are said to have maintained their position, continuing to press for the release of funds during Phase A of the proposed framework agreement before committing to concrete actions under the deal.

The President contrasted the proposed agreement with the nuclear accord negotiated during the Obama administration, calling the earlier deal "a disgrace" and arguing that the new arrangement would permanently block Iran's path to a nuclear weapon.

Trump indicated that economic considerations had weighed heavily on his decision-making. He said he had been concerned about the impact of military action on financial markets but was encouraged by subsequent market performance.

"We have the highest stock market in history," he said, adding that the United States had nevertheless been prepared to take what he called a "detour" to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Iran War: Iran's IRGC claims damage at Kuwait airport caused by US Patriot missile system error

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has rejected allegations that it was responsible for damage at Kuwait International Airport, insisting that the incident was caused by a malfunction in the US-made Patriot missile defence system rather than any Iranian military action, according to Iranian state media.

The response came after former Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani sharply criticised what he described as Iran's repeated military actions against Gulf states, calling them both surprising and unjustified amid rising regional tensions.

Writing on X on Wednesday, Al Thani questioned the rationale behind Iran's recent attacks targeting Bahrain and Kuwait. He also suggested there were grounds to examine whether the operations had been planned well in advance.

While stressing Qatar's interest in maintaining positive relations with Iran, the former premier said Doha would not accept being "blackmailed" by Tehran.

Even as Israeli and Lebanese officials held a fourth round of US-mediated direct talks in Washington, fighting across the border continued on Tuesday, underscoring the challenges facing efforts to end months of conflict in the region.

At the same time, concerns over regional security and Iran's nuclear programme remained in focus. According to Al Jazeera, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi said during a visit to the United Arab Emirates that several previously active nuclear initiatives in Iran had stopped. He added that the ongoing conflict and attacks on Iranian assets had significantly altered assessments of Tehran's nuclear programme.

Against this backdrop, Israeli and Lebanese delegates met at the US State Department for direct negotiations. Speaking before a hearing of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism about the prospects for peace.

"Israel and Lebanon can do a peace deal tomorrow," Rubio said, adding that "Israel has no territorial claims in Lebanon. Hezbollah is the impediment."

The talks come as the United States continues efforts to broker an understanding between the two sides. According to the Lebanese embassy in Washington, the proposed framework would initially stop Hezbollah attacks on Israel and limit Israeli military operations against Beirut before potentially expanding to other areas.

The conflict began on March 2 when Hezbollah launched attacks against Israel, saying it was acting in support of Iran. The escalation soon drew Lebanon deeper into the broader regional crisis.

So far, neither Israel nor Hezbollah has formally accepted the proposal put forward by US President Donald Trump.

Despite resistance from Hezbollah and the absence of a formal agreement, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam defended the ongoing negotiations, describing diplomatic engagement as "the least costly choice for Lebanon".
