Israel built secret network at Azerbaijan border to closely monitor Iran during war
Israel reportedly operated a network of military around Iran during its recent conflict with Tehran.
One of the most significant deployments was in Azerbaijan, where Israeli special forces, intelligence personnel and drone units were allegedly stationed close to Iran's northern border, according to a CNN report.
Azerbaijan denies claim
The report claimed Israeli personnel operated from several locations in southern Azerbaijan, some as close as 97 kilometres from the Iranian city of Tabriz, which was targeted during the war.
The alleged presence included special operations forces, rescue teams, drone operators and Mossad personnel.
However, Azerbaijan strongly rejected the claims, saying its territory was not used for operations against any third country.
A spokesperson for the Azerbaijani embassy in the United States said in a statement to CNN, “We firmly reject unfounded claims regarding the alleged use of Azerbaijan’s territory for operations against third countries.”
Wider regional network around Iran
Besides Azerbaijan, Israel reportedly maintained facilities in Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Somaliland, creating a network that covered Iran's northern, western and southern borders.
The report said covert sites in Iraq were used for logistics and possible search-and-rescue missions, while Israel also deployed an Iron Dome air defence battery in the UAE during the conflict.
Both Iraq and the UAE have denied hosting unauthorised Israeli military operations.
In a statement, Iraq’s military said there were no “unauthorized bases or forces” in the country as of early March.
Somaliland, an unrecognised territory in the Horn of Africa, was also reportedly viewed as a strategic location that could support long-range operations linked to Iran.
According to the CNN report, Israeli preparations near the Azerbaijan-Iran border began months before the conflict. Surveillance equipment and listening devices were allegedly installed to monitor Iranian military activity and provide early warning of missile launches.
