Train crashes into school bus in Belgium; 2 teenagers among 4 killed
A train crashed into a school bus in Belgium on Tuesday, killing four people, including two teenagers, and injuring several others, according to officials.
Belgium's transport minister said the victims included two teenagers, the bus driver and another adult after the train collided with the school bus in Buggenhout, Reuters reported, citing RTL.
Belgium's interior minister Bernard Quintin earlier confirmed that there were multiple victims in the accident.
"With great dismay, I learnt of the tragic accident in Buggenhout, where a school bus was struck by a train. My thoughts go out to the victims and their loved ones. I wish the injured much strength," Quintin wrote on X.
Emergency services rushed to the site following the collision as rescue and relief operations continued. A spokesperson for rail network operator Infrabel said that the accident took place at a level crossing in Belgium's northern Flanders region.
"The impact was extremely violent," spokesman Frederic Sacre told AFP, describing the toll as "dramatic".
"It happened at around 8:08 am when a minibus was struck by a train that was due to stop at the next station, which was about a kilometre away," he added.
This is a developing story. More details awaited.
