When Madonna made headlines

Madonna needs no introduction. The American singer is known for controversial content in her music videos. She is often referred to as the "Queen of Pop", and is also cited as an influence among other artists around the world. As we say, fame comes with a price tag, Madonna has also seen herself embroiled in various controversies. Let's take a look at some of them.

Provocative lyrics: Madonna's song 'Papa don’t preach' caught everyone’s attention and raised several eyebrows with its provocative lyrics. The song narrated the story of an unmarried pregnant girl, who chooses to keep her baby. This thought became the talk of the town and led millions of parents to have serious discussions on the topic with their daughters.

Offended Hindu sentiments: At the 1998 Video Music Awards, Madonna offended Hindus when she took to the stage wearing Hindu facial markings that symbolize chastity, purity, and dedication to God. The World Vaishnava Association said it was offensive of Madonna to use the marks while simulating a sex act on stage - especially since she was sporting a see-through tank top at that time. Madonna not only offended Hinduism, but also Christianity, as in one of her videos she had posed like Jesus Christ.

Madonna's desperate act: In the year 2012, Madonna did something weird, something that can be called as a publicity stunt. During one of her shows on her MDNA tour, the singer purposely pulled down her bra to reveal her assets to the packed house. The audience at the venue were very detested with this move. Many of them disapproved of the racy act which even shocked Howard Stern. He blasted Madonna’s stunt and went as far as calling her “desperate”.

Lesbian kiss: Gay and lesbian act displayed on the stage is a big 'no no' for the audience. However, being the controversy queen that she is, Madonna made sure that such a thing takes place at her concert. While at the MTV Awards, Madonna opened the show with Britney Spears and kissed her passionately, that too on her lips. She also gave her tongue to fellow performer Christina Aguilera, but luckily, the scene was cut and was not that visible to the audience.

Masturbation scene: Madonna's 'Like a virgin' on her Blonde Ambition Tour had offended so many people that the police were standing by to arrest her during her stop in Toronto, Canada. Now you must be wondering what lead the police to do so. The answer is her stimulated masturbation scene at the end of the song, just like it is depicted in her documentary Truth and Dare. This controversy took place in the year 1991. Madonna and a few other pop singers are known for such bold acts.
