Barracuda Queens Season 1 Review : This breezy rich girl’s crime saga is entertaining in parts

STORY: A group of five suburban girls’ resorts in order to pay off their mounting debts.

REVIEW: Created by Camilla Ahlgren and directed by Amanda Adolfsson, this new Netflix series from Sweden is set in 1995. The six-part series follows four friends who are having fun in Båstad, Sweden on a weekend away from their families in Stockholm. Louise Millkvist aka Lollo (Alva Bratt) has a tab running at a bar and gets her friends, Mia Thorstensson (Tea Stjärne) and sisters Klara (Tindra Monsen) and Freida Rapp (Sandra Strandberg Zubovic), drunk. The next morning, both Lollo and Klara have messed up and are in thousands and thousands of debt. To repay their debts, these girls, along with Amina Khalil (Sarah Gustafsson), begin pulling off heists at their rich neighbours’ houses.

Despite being inspired by true events, the writers (Sofie Forsman, Tove Forsman, and Veronica Zacco) have created a formulaic drama that is only partially entertaining. The screenplay is quite fast-paced, and even with so many parallel tales, it never feels cluttered. However, none of the heist sequences are very engaging; the girls may be having a good time, but there isn't much to keep you interested. And then, after all of this buildup, the ending falls flat.

Tindra Monsen as Klara, Alva Bratt as Lollo, Sandra Zubovic as Freida Rapp, Tea Stjärne as Mia, and Sarah Gustafsson as Amina have all delivered solid performances. The rest of the actors that play the main character's parents have nothing to do because the spotlight is always on these girls and their stories.

In a nutshell, 'Barracuda Queens' fails to leave any impact but its fast-paced and breezy episodes, each ranging from 30-35 minutes in duration, make it a one-time watch.
