Speaking on TV-D1 Flight Test, Astronomer RC Kapoor on October 17 said that it will carry the Indian astronauts in space. He also shared that the TV-D1 Flight is one of the first of the four flights through plans to carry. RC Kapoor said, “This is a test flight of the rocket that will finally carry the Indian astronauts up into space. So under Gaganyaan, this TV-D1 Flight is a rocket very similar to that that will eventually carry the Indian astronauts. So TV-D1 Flight is one of the first of the four flights through plans to carry. It has a liquid-stage engine. There are, of course, solid fuel boosters also. And apart from that there is a system equivalent of a cryogenic engine. And then on top of that is the orbital module. The orbital module is the one that will eventually go into space and be placed in an orbit above the Earth. And it will be circumambulating the earth for about three days. And there are supposed to be three astronauts in that crew module. The orbital module consists of two modules, which is one is a crew module, and the other is a service module. The crew module is where the astronauts will be placed and they have the experiments to carry and then all their life support system. The service module has liquid rockets so they go into space and then are to be placed in the orbit. So service module also is part of the orbital module. So in this test, the idea is that in any emergency situation, suppose something goes wrong, how do we save the astronauts? Because in any human space flight program, the most important thing is the life of the people that are going above in the rocket. So there is a system called the crew escape system and attached to that is the crew module. In an emergency situation, this abort will take place and that is going to be tested by ISRO this time on 21st October. The rocket will be taken to 17-kilometer height from where the abort sequence will be followed. And then off the coast of Sriharikota, the crew module is brought down using the parachutes.”
