The controversy surrounding Lionel Messi’s chaotic Kolkata visit in December 2025 has resurfaced after the newly elected BJP government in West Bengal decided to reopen the case. West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh alleged that Messi was “invited and insulted” due to political games and said action has been initiated over alleged irregularities linked to the event. An FIR has been filed against former sports minister Aroop Biswas, former DGP Rajeev Kumar, councillor Juin Biswas and IAS officer Santanu Basu following allegations by organiser Satadru Dutta that unauthorised people were allowed onto the pitch, forcing Messi to leave Salt Lake Stadium within minutes. Thousands of fans who bought expensive tickets were left disappointed. West Bengal Sports Minister Nisith Pramanik said the government has ordered a fresh probe and directed organisers to refund fans who attended the Messi GOAT Tour event.
