Elon Musk has commented on India’s declining fertility rate after new data showed the country’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has fallen below the replacement level. Responding to a post on X, Musk said India’s birth rate has dropped below replacement level and added that among the most educated sections, it fell below replacement many years ago. The reaction came after the 2024 Sample Registration System report showed India’s TFR declined from 2.1 to 1.9 children per woman. The report stated that most states are now below the replacement level of 2.1, with only a few states still above it. Delhi recorded the lowest TFR at 1.2. Experts warn that sustained low fertility could lead to an ageing population, a shrinking workforce and pressure on welfare systems.
