President Donald Trump has revealed that his administration is negotiating what he calls “total access” to Greenland, describing the Arctic territory as critical to U.S. and NATO security amid rising competition with Russia and China. Speaking to Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, Trump said the talks involve open-ended access with “no time limit,” underscoring the strategic value of Greenland in modern missile defence and surveillance. “Everything comes over Greenland. If the bad guys start shooting, it comes over Greenland,” Trump said, calling the island “pretty invaluable” and pointing to advances in technology that now make full Arctic coverage possible. When pressed on whether the talks amounted to an acquisition, Trump replied, “It’s really being negotiated now… but essentially it’s total access.” The remarks come after Trump walked back threats of imposing heavy tariffs on European countries, following what he described as a “framework of a future deal” reached with NATO. Trump said the agreement emerged after talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and covers not just Greenland but “the entire Arctic Region.” NATO later confirmed that negotiations are aimed at ensuring “Russia and China never gain a foothold” in Greenland. Rutte, speaking to Sky News, praised Trump as “the leader of the free world” and urged allies to take his security concerns seriously. “If he is worried about something, we better listen,” Rutte said, while stressing that discussions focused on Arctic security rather than U.S. ownership of Greenland. He reaffirmed NATO’s commitment to Article Five, calling it “iron clad,” and warned against losing focus on Ukraine amid the Greenland debate. Meanwhile, reactions from Greenland itself have been cautious and critical. Greenland’s prime minister said the goal remains to “continue a peaceful dialogue” while standing firm on the island’s right to self-determination.
