In this video, she explains how her team's research on bladder cancer in Scottish Terriers will help to better treat this disease in dogs and humans. Knapp says that Scottish Terriers were chosen for this research because they are 20 times more likely to develop cancer than other dog breeds. This gives researchers an opportunity to learn about the genetics that can increase the risk of bladder cancer and enable them to study the cancer in its earliest stages. Knapp says that her team screened a group of Scottish Terriers every 6 months for 3 years in order to observe bladder cancer before symptoms developed. They found that these early stages responded better to treatments and gave valuable insight into how bladder cancer works on a molecular level. These findings will help improve the treatment of bladder cancer in the future for both dogs and humans.
