Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded his China trip with a press conference in Beijing, where he issued strong remarks on Ukraine, India, and Donald Trump’s tariff policy. Putin reiterated that he is open to talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky but dismissed meeting him in his current position as “a path to nowhere.” He stressed that Ukraine may choose its own security system but not at Russia’s expense, again opposing NATO membership while leaving the door open to EU membership. Putin rejected the idea of trading territory for security guarantees and said Russia is fighting for the rights of people in contested regions, not land. He reminded that Moscow had offered Kyiv a withdrawal deal as early as 2022, but Ukraine shifted its stance. On Zelensky, he said a true referendum on territorial issues requires lifting martial law and holding elections. Putin also revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump asked him to arrange a meeting with Zelensky. Criticising Trump’s tariff threats, Putin warned: “You cannot talk to India or China like that,” stressing that pressure tactics against major economies are futile. The Russian leader underlined that Russia respects the will of those who voted in referendums to join the Federation, calling it democracy in action.
