On September 5, 1977, NASA launched the Voyager 1 space probe to study the outer solar system. Since then the Voyager has operated for 43 years, 2 months and 6 days as of November 12, 2020. On November 12, 1980, Voyager 1 came closest to Saturn’s cloud-tops. The space probe’s on-board cameras took Saturn’s first pictures. The camera detected complex structures in Saturn’s rings. Voyager 1’s study of Saturn’s atmosphere revealed that 7 per cent of its upper atmosphere is made up of helium, while almost all the rest is hydrogen.’
