Data accessed through RTI shows, Covid was the leading cause of death in Mumbai in 2020, displacing usual chart toppers such as cancer and heart attacks. Out of 1.1 lakh deaths recorded in the city during the pandemic’s first year, 11,105 (10 per cent) were Covid fatalities. The second highest recorded deaths were due to cancer at 8,576 and made up 7.6 per cent of total deaths in 2020. While heart attacks accounted for 5,633 (5 per cent) of deaths in the city. Between 2018 to 2020, death due to heart attacks fell by 35 per cent and cancer deaths dropped by 15 per cent.
